Collage: The Ethnosphere
The class will be introduced to National Geographic's Explorer Wade Davis who teaches about what calls the ethnosphere, a word he uses to describe the imaginative contributions of humanity to the planet. He makes emphasis on people's stories. They are global resources, just like air, water, and green life. Just like the biosphere, the ethnosphere is also threatened by rampant modernization and globalization.
Collage is a technique of an art production, primarily used in the visual arts, where the artwork is made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole.
Given the materials given in class (National Geographic magazines), create a group collage. After experiencing the activity, plan a lesson with your group members.
Tales of the Ethnosphere. UTNE Reader
"Wanting More" is a piece about desire. Passion drives perserverance, and the people depicted on the right side of the photo are longing for the left, separated by the yearning hand on the train window. As a society, we are never satisfied and always reaching for something bigger.
Showing appreciation for the natural world and images that may not resonate with your culture. Even though we may not understand them, we can still learn to appreciate and respect the cultures from which they are gleaned.
“Sunset: How do you sleep?”
Our collage entitled “Sunset: How do you sleep?” Encaptures whimsical, dream like colors in the form of an ombré sunset. It is supposed to be entimepreted as as dreamscape, similar to the colors you see when you close your eyes at night. How can you sleep when the world is this beautiful and bustling? When there is so much magic and beauty in the world (as exemplified by the images from both ocean, land and sky)?
